Before your appointment
Railway or train driver: which examination should I book?
Book Railway if:
You carry out safety-critical tasks on the railway but are not required to take the specific health check for train drivers holding a train driver licence.
This can include work as a traffic controller, train dispatcher, principal protection supervisor, inspector, signalling safety inspector, protection supervisor or other safety-critical roles.
Requirements can differ between operators, so bring your employer’s request or information about which role the examination is for.
Book Train driver if:
You drive trains or are covered by the Swedish Transport Agency’s specific health requirements for train drivers.
This applies if you:
- are applying for a train driver licence for the first time
- already hold a train driver licence and need a regular health check
- need a medical assessment after a long absence, an accident or an incident
What does the medical examination include?
Both railway staff and train drivers are examined with a focus on medical conditions that can affect traffic safety.
The exact content depends on which examination you book.
Health examination for railway staff
A health examination under TSFS 2019:112 includes at least:
- general medical examination
- vision test
- colour vision check
- hearing check
- urine or blood test to rule out diabetes
- review of current alcohol and drug habits
If something comes up in the health declaration or the examination, further tests or medical examinations may be needed.
Health examination for train drivers
A regular health check for train drivers includes, among other things:
- general medical examination
- vision test and colour vision
- hearing check
- height and weight
- blood pressure
- blood sugar
- relevant urine or blood tests if needed
For train drivers aged 40 or over, the regular health check also includes an assessment of a resting ECG.
The initial examination for a train driver licence includes a resting ECG regardless of age, as well as testing for alcohol, drugs, medicines and other substances that can affect traffic safety.
How often do I need the examination?
Railway
For safety-critical staff covered by TSFS 2019:112, the health examination is normally done:
- every five years up to age 41
- every three years from age 41 up to and including age 62
- every year after age 62
The doctor can set a shorter interval if your health requires it.
Some railway operators have other requirements under their safety management system. Always follow the information from your employer.
Train drivers
Train drivers with a licence must have a regular health check:
- at least every three years up to age 55
- every year from your 55th birthday
Book your examination in good time so your required health check doesn’t expire.
How do I get the medical report?
After the examination, the doctor makes an overall medical assessment and fills in the medical report that applies to your examination.
What happens to the report next depends on whether you booked Railway or Train driver.
Railway: the report goes to your employer
For staff covered by TSFS 2019:112, the medical report is handled according to the employer’s safety management system.
It should normally not be sent to the Swedish Transport Agency.
Your employer is responsible for the documentation routines and for making sure you meet the health requirements before you carry out safety-critical tasks.
Train driver: you send the report to the Swedish Transport Agency
Train drivers receive the medical report after the examination.
After an initial examination for a train driver licence, send the medical report to the Swedish Transport Agency together with the other documents in your application.
After a regular health check, you as the train driver are also responsible for making sure the medical report reaches the Swedish Transport Agency.
We recommend sending in the report as soon as possible after the examination.
Do I need to send the certificate to the Swedish Transport Agency?
It depends on which examination you had.
Railway: No, not normally. Your employer handles the medical report.
Train driver: Yes. After an initial or regular health examination, you are responsible for sending the medical report to the Swedish Transport Agency.
