Here you can find the Swedish Transport Agency’s information on alcohol interlocks
Safe driving with an alcohol interlock after drunk driving
If you have had, or are at risk of having, your driving licence revoked due to drunk driving or aggravated drunk driving, you have the option to apply to continue driving with an alcohol interlock installed in your car.
Who is eligible to apply for an alcohol interlock?
For your alcohol interlock application to be approved, you must meet the following requirements:
- You have had, or are at risk of having, your driving licence revoked due to drunk driving or aggravated drunk driving (caused by alcohol).
- You have a driving licence issued in an EEA country.
- You are permanently resident in Sweden.
- If the drunk driving offence involves narcotics or if you use narcotics, you are not eligible for a licence with an alcohol interlock condition. Any treatment with narcotic-classified medications must be prescribed and must not pose a risk to traffic safety.
Having an alcohol interlock does not affect any fines or prison sentences you may be sentenced to.
What applies during the alcohol interlock period?
You can be granted an alcohol interlock condition for a period of either one or two years, depending on the circumstances. This is counted from the time you are notified of the decision, and you cannot include any time your licence was previously revoked.
The conditional period is two years in the following situations:
- In cases of aggravated drunk driving.
- If, during the past five years, you have committed repeated offences of drunk driving due to alcohol.
In all other cases, the conditional period is one year.
The alcohol interlock is personal
During the conditional period, you may only drive vehicles that have an alcohol interlock that is unique to you
and approved by the Swedish Transport Agency. The alcohol interlock must be supplied by a provider approved by the Swedish Transport Agency.
The Swedish Transport Agency also requires that the alcohol interlock be maintained and serviced at a designated service centre during the conditional period. In case of improper maintenance, the decision regarding the alcohol interlock condition may be revoked and the driving licence withdrawn.
More information about the application process, what is expected during the conditional period, and how to get your driving licence back after the alcohol interlock condition can be found on the following pages.
