Medical certificate for working with thermosetting plastics, asbestos and silica

The medical certificate shows that you have had the medical check required for the work in question, and that the doctor has assessed whether you are medically fit for the work based on the examination.

A medical certificate is required for certain types of work where you are exposed to, for example:

  • Sensitising chemical substances that can occur when working with thermosetting plastics
  • Diisocyanates and certain other sensitising substances
  • Asbestos and asbestos-containing dust
  • Respirable crystalline silica or cristobalite dust
  • Certain synthetic inorganic fibres and other fibrogenic dust

The medical check required depends on the substance, the work tasks and the level of exposure.

Medical certificate for working with asbestos

Asbestos can pose serious health risks when asbestos-containing dust is released and inhaled. Exposure can occur during demolition, renovation, asbestos removal and work on older building materials.

For work covered by the requirements of the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket), the employer must arrange a medical check that ends with a medical certificate.

The check is done before the work starts and then at regular intervals according to current regulations.

In Swedish, the terms “härdplastintyg” and “läkarintyg för härdplast” (thermoset certificate) are often used, but the type of medical check you need depends on the substances and products actually used in your work.

Medical check for thermosetting plastics

Thermosetting plastics are used in many industries and are found in products such as adhesives, lacquers, paints, insulation, expanding foam, composite materials and other chemical products.

When working with certain sensitising chemical substances, the employer may need to arrange a medical check that ends with a medical certificate.

This can apply to exposure to diisocyanates, organic acid anhydrides and certain cyanoacrylates.

Examples of occupations and workplaces where exposure can occur include construction and industrial workers, spray painters, workshop staff, foundry workers and anyone who works with adhesives, paints, foams or other chemical products.

Medical certificate for working with silica and silica dust

Silica occurs naturally in stone, rock, sand and many building materials. Fine respirable silica dust can form when cutting, drilling, grinding, chiselling or demolishing materials such as concrete and stone.

A medical check with a medical certificate may be required when the employer’s exposure assessment shows sufficiently high and long-term exposure to respirable crystalline silica or cristobalite dust.

The employer is responsible for assessing the exposure and deciding which employees the requirements apply to.

How the medical check works

The examination is adapted to the exposure the medical certificate covers.

Health declaration and medical review

The doctor reviews your health, past and current working conditions, medications and other information relevant to the exposure.

For work with sensitising substances, the focus is on respiratory symptoms, asthma, allergies, hypersensitivity and skin problems.

For work with asbestos, silica and other fibrogenic dust, the focus is on the lungs and any previous dust exposure.

Medical examination

The doctor carries out a clinical examination focused on the health risks associated with the work.

Spirometry: lung function test

The medical check includes a lung function test with spirometry when required for the exposure.

Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast the air leaves your lungs.

Chest X-ray for fibrogenic dust

For work with asbestos, silica and certain other types of fibrogenic dust, the results of a chest X-ray must be taken into account according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s examination schedule.

If you need a chest X-ray as part of your check, we will let you know. This comes at an additional cost.

The medical certificate is issued

After the examination, the doctor makes an overall medical assessment.

If the requirements are met, the doctor issues a medical certificate for the work or exposure the check covers.

When do I need to renew my medical certificate?

How often you need the medical check depends on the type of exposure.

For work with certain sensitising chemical substances, the check is normally done before the work starts, once more after the work has started, and then at intervals of no more than two years. The doctor can decide that the next check should take place sooner.

For work with asbestos, silica and other fibrogenic dust, the check is done before the work starts and then normally at intervals of no more than three years. A shorter interval may be needed here too.

Frequently asked questions about medical certificates for thermosets, asbestos and silica

What is this medical certificate?

The medical certificate is issued after a medical check. It shows that the doctor has assessed that you can do the work based on the medical requirements for the exposure.

What is the Swedish term for this certificate?

The formal Swedish term is “tjänstbarhetsintyg”. Many people also call it “läkarintyg för härdplast” or “härdplastintyg”, which is what your employer may ask for.

Not all thermosetting plastics are covered by exactly the same requirements. The substances, work tasks and exposure decide which check you need.

When is a medical certificate required for working with asbestos?

A medical certificate is required for employees covered by the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s rules on medical checks for asbestos exposure. The check must be done before the work starts and then at regular intervals.

When is a medical certificate required for working with silica?

It depends on the employer’s exposure assessment. For crystalline silica and cristobalite, there are specific limits for both the exposure level and how long the work lasts.

Is spirometry included?

Spirometry is part of the medical check for the relevant sensitising substances and for fibrogenic dust such as asbestos and silica.

Do I need a chest X-ray?

For work with fibrogenic dust such as asbestos and silica, a chest X-ray must be done according to a specific examination schedule. Whether you need one depends on which check you are having and any previous X-rays.

How long is the medical certificate valid?

It depends on the exposure the certificate covers. For certain sensitising chemical substances, the interval is no more than two years. For fibrogenic dust, it is normally no more than three years. The doctor can set an earlier date for your next medical check.

Can an employer book medical certificates for several employees?

Yes. Companies that need medical checks and certificates for several employees can contact Läkarintyg.se to make a company booking.
