What is a Truck Medical Certificate?

Driving heavier vehicles entails greater responsibility for fellow road users and passengers, necessitating a medical certificate proving good health.

The examination includes a physical and psychological health check, review of medical history, and inquiries about alcohol or drug abuse.

As we handle everything digitally, you don’t need to bring the medical form provided by the Swedish Transport Agency. We’ll provide a printed copy on-site if needed.

Obtaining the Driver’s License

Before starting your driver’s training, apply for a driver’s license with the Swedish Transport Agency. The application must be supplemented with a medical certificate. The easiest way to apply is via the Agency’s web service. You will have to go through their site in Swedish as the forms are not available at the english site.

Extension of Higher Qualification

Periodically, you must apply for permit renewal to retain your D-eligibility. As the permit renewal period approaches, the Swedish Transport Agency sends information to your registered Swedish postal address.

Medical Requirements for Different Driver License Eligibilities

The Swedish Transport Agency classifies driving license eligibilities into three groups:

Group I: Includes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, and tractor licenses

Group II: Includes C1, C1E, C, and CE

Group III: Includes D1, D1E, D, DE, and TAXI

The medical examination requirements vary between groups, with stricter requirements for groups II and III compared to group I.

Vision

For group I, you must achieve at least 0.5 visual acuity when looking with both eyes simultaneously. It’s acceptable if you have vision in only one eye, as long as your vision is at least 0.5. Some minor limitations in the field of vision and double vision are allowed, as long as the double vision occurs only when looking to the sides. Some impairment in night vision is also permissible.

For groups II and III, you must be able to see with both eyes and you need to be able to see at least 0.1 with the worst eye and 0.8 with the best. These qualifications also place higher requirements on the field of vision and you cannot have any type of double vision.

For groups II and III, you must see with both eyes and achieve at least 0.1 vision with the worst eye and 0.8 with the best. These qualifications place higher requirements on the field of vision, and double vision is not allowed.

Hearing

Groups I and II do not have hearing requirements, so complete hearing loss still qualifies for a driving license. For group III, sufficient hearing is necessary for communication with passengers. If a hearing aid is needed to achieve adequate hearing, it must be used while driving the vehicle.

Other Diseases

Some diseases and conditions may pose obstacles or require more frequent check-ups for an approved medical certificate, particularly for higher eligibility categories. This primarily applies to diabetes (see separate section), cardiovascular disease, seizures, and residual conditions post-illness. Diabetes is not an insurmountable obstacle for obtaining a driving license, but the condition must be adequately controlled for us to issue a medical certificate. In such cases, we will communicate with your treating physician. Feel free to contact us with questions, preferably via email for accurate responses.
