Medical examination for night work according to Section 29 of the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s regulations on Medical Control in the Workplace (AFS 2019:3).
The medical examination for night workers aims to reduce the risks of employees suffering from illness or accidents due to night work, which normally involves at least three hours of work at night per day or is likely to cover at least 38% of the annual working time at night.
It primarily focuses on serious sleep disturbances, possible accidents related to reduced alertness, presence of cardiovascular disease, endocrine disease, or gastrointestinal disease.
Other factors considered are the use of alcohol, tobacco, medication, or illegal drugs, as well as eating habits and social situation.
Legal examinations
The health examination for night work should be offered to employees who normally work at least 3 hours of their shift between 10 pm and 6 am or who are likely to work at least one third of their annual working time between 10 pm and 6 am.
The rules do not apply to temporary night work that is not expected to exceed three months.
The examination should be offered before starting night work. Thereafter, it should be offered every six years – and after the person has turned 50, the examination should be offered every three years.
How the medical examination works
The employee fills out a health questionnaire.
When you, as the responsible party, have ordered the service, your employee is scheduled for a health examination. The time is communicated via email to both you and your employee. At the same time, a health questionnaire is sent out for your employee to fill out before the visit.
Doctor’s visit
During the doctor’s visit, a health examination is conducted, and the questionnaire addressing lifestyle habits is discussed. Your employee receives information on dietary tips for night work.
Medical certificate issued
Based on the visit, a certificate is issued and sent to you as the client.
